HVAC (pronounced either "H-V-A-C" or "H-vak") is an initialism or acronym that stands for "heating, ventilating, and air conditioning". HVAC is sometimes referred to as climate control and is particularly important in the design of medium to large industrial and office buildings such as skyscrapers and in marine environments such as aquariums, where humidity and temperature must all be closely regulated while maintaining safe and healthy conditions within. In certain regions (e.g., UK) the term "Building Services" is also used, but may also include plumbing and electrical systems. Refrigeration is sometimes added to the field's abbreviation as HVAC&R or HVACR, or ventilating is dropped as HACR (such as the designation of HACR-rated circuit breakers). Heating, ventilating, and air conditioning is based on the principles of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer, and on inventions and discoveries made by Michael Faraday, Willis Carrier, Reuben Trane, James Joule, William Rankine, Sadi Carnot, and many others. The invention of the components of HVAC systems went hand-in-hand with the industrial revolution, and new methods of modernization, higher efficiency, and system control are constantly introduced by companies and inventors all over the world. The three functions of heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning are closely interrelated. All seek to provide thermal comfort, acceptable indoor air quality, and reasonable installation, operation, and maintenance costs. HVAC systems can provide ventilation, reduce air infiltration, and maintain pressure relationships between spaces. How air is delivered to, and removed from spaces is known as room air distribution. In modern buildings the design, installation, and control systems of these functions are integrated into one or more HVAC systems. For very small buildings, contractors normally "size" and select HVAC systems and equipment. For larger buildings where required by law, "building services" designers and engineers, such as mechanical, architectural, or building services engineers analyze, design, and specify the HVAC systems, and specialty mechanical contractors build and commission them. In all buildings, building permits and code-compliance inspections of the installations are the norm. The HVAC industry is a worldwide enterprise, with career opportunities including operation and maintenance, system design and construction, equipment manufacturing and sales, and in education and research. The HVAC industry had been historically regulated by the manufacturers of HVAC equipment, but Regulating and Standards organizations such as ASHRAE, SMACNA, ACCA, Uniform Mechanical Code, International Mechanical Code, and AMCA have been established to support the industry and encourage high standards and achievement. GNU Free Documentation License Can someone explain what BacNet and Lon means in the controls industry ? Q. Also can somone tell me where i can learn basic knowledge of Air Conditioning , Heating and Ventilating ? Asked by JDA - Mon Jan 22 06:37:16 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. BACnet is the world standard for high level interfaces and interoperable management. It is the only worldwide-accepted method of passing management level information between systems in the building services industry. BACnet became an ASHRAE and ANSI standard in North America in 1995. BACnet became the European standard through CEN in 2000, and will shortly be the only real world standard when it finishes the ISO process through TC205. Regardless of acceptance level, it is the only protocol really designed and suited for transmitting complex information such as schedules, calendars, trend logs, alarms, and event notification. Lon is the most widespread device level protocol. Our rental property faces north west, which means we get the full force of the sun during summer from about 2pm until sunset on the broad side of the house (it's a long narrow house). On summer days the temperature inside is consistently warmer than the outside temperature (for example, we had a top of 27 degrees here last week, and the indoor temperature was 31). We have lived through two summers here already and we find that our home becomes uninhabitable during this time. It's torture to stay during the day as all the 'living' areas of the house, including the main bedroom, are in the front of the house and get the hottest. The house is poorly ventilated and so it is incredibly difficult to cool the house down at night, especially if… [cont.] Asked by cheesybree - Sun Nov 1 22:46:42 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Unfortunately the landlord is not required to install an air conditioning unit per the tenants request. Move out before the summer comes and that will solve all ur problems. OR invest in stand alone fans for every room. OR purchase a small portable air conditioning unit. Answered by LocalBoy - Sun Nov 1 22:55:42 2009 If you know air-conditioning, please help?
Q. I remodeled an old Chicago bungalow. To get AC, and avoid ruining 9 foot ceilings, (while also adding cooling to the attic) I ran ducts along the knee walls in the attic and then registers straight out the ceiling below to the first floor. I also cut into the sides of the ducts to go straight out thru the knee walls to cool the attic. BUT, the AC can barely keep the house at 82 degrees. I admit, the attic is MUCH, MUCH, cooler, and the "edge" is taken off the 1st floor, but how much will I gain if I ventilate the enclosed area around the ducts to the outside, say with a fan? The ducts are sealed around the perimeter of the the attic walls and it must get really, really hot in there. All the AC is LOST in transit with the heat against the… [cont.] Asked by sunrayman123 - Fri Jun 26 22:12:36 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I'm having a hard time visualizing this duct work. You say you ran the ducts in the attic and that you cut into the sides of the ducts to cool the attic, which is now a master bedroom. If that is the case, what would cause the ducts to get hot if they are in the conditioned space? Besides that, has the system ever cooled effectively? If so, what has changed? Was a load calculation performed to determine the latent and sensible heat load on the bungalow? Without more information, there's not much more I can offer. Sorry.
