HVAC (pronounced either "H-V-A-C" or "H-vak") is an initialism or acronym that stands for "heating, ventilating, and air conditioning". HVAC is sometimes referred to as climate control and is particularly important in the design of medium to large industrial and office buildings such as skyscrapers and in marine environments such as aquariums, where humidity and temperature must all be closely regulated while maintaining safe and healthy conditions within. In certain regions (e.g., UK) the term "Building Services" is also used, but may also include plumbing and electrical systems. Refrigeration is sometimes added to the field's abbreviation as HVAC&R or HVACR, or ventilating is dropped as HACR (such as the designation of HACR-rated circuit breakers).

Heating, ventilating, and air conditioning is based on the principles of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer, and on inventions and discoveries made by Michael Faraday, Willis Carrier, Reuben Trane, James Joule, William Rankine, Sadi Carnot, and many others. The invention of the components of HVAC systems went hand-in-hand with the industrial revolution, and new methods of modernization, higher efficiency, and system control are constantly introduced by companies and inventors all over the world.

The three functions of heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning are closely interrelated. All seek to provide thermal comfort, acceptable indoor air quality, and reasonable installation, operation, and maintenance costs. HVAC systems can provide ventilation, reduce air infiltration, and maintain pressure relationships between spaces. How air is delivered to, and removed from spaces is known as room air distribution.

In modern buildings the design, installation, and control systems of these functions are integrated into one or more HVAC systems. For very small buildings, contractors normally "size" and select HVAC systems and equipment. For larger buildings where required by law, "building services" designers and engineers, such as mechanical, architectural, or building services engineers analyze, design, and specify the HVAC systems, and specialty mechanical contractors build and commission them. In all buildings, building permits and code-compliance inspections of the installations are the norm.

The HVAC industry is a worldwide enterprise, with career opportunities including operation and maintenance, system design and construction, equipment manufacturing and sales, and in education and research. The HVAC industry had been historically regulated by the manufacturers of HVAC equipment, but Regulating and Standards organizations such as ASHRAE, SMACNA, ACCA, Uniform Mechanical Code, International Mechanical Code, and AMCA have been established to support the industry and encourage high standards and achievement.

Would like to start an HVAC/R business in Jamaica & live there as well?
Q. I would like to live in Jamaica as I have grown to respect the peoples, the Islands way's and Culture. I would like to start an HVAC/R (Heating,Ventilating,Air conditioning and Refrigeration) company. My objective is not to be rich, but to live simply and if God grants me...the ability to employ at least one working man. Not using another cultures banality for my own enjoyment as a tourist...this is against who I am.To be granted the chance to live and work in Jamaica, knowing that HVAC is needed in many areas not close to Kingston or Ocho Rios and that I know that with my knowledge and drive, despite physical disability that this will work. How do I do this? How do I start a business in which I can hire a partner, willing to learn the… [cont.]

A. You didn't say where you're from...anyway, if you're coming from another country you can not work in JA unless you have a work permit, either through a company you work for or by becoming a citizen. So you need to overcome that BIG hurdle 1st. Then your equipment will attract duty when you bring it in, up to 35% of its value..plus the cost of shipping. In addition you'll be competing with alot of small independent HVAC contractors in addition to larger well established ones like ATL. So good luck !!

Ohio landlord responsibilities?
Q. According to the Ohio Landlord Tenant Act a landlord is obligated to Maintain in good and safe working order and condition all electrical, plumbing, sanitary, heating, ventilating, and air conditioning fixtures and appliances, and elevators, supplied or required to be supplied by him; With this said, our lease states that if anything breaks from the furnace to frozen pipes to the gas pipes we are responsible. I agree if we cause the damage we should pay for it. But furnace malfunctioning or a gas leak should not be our problem. I would have bought a house if I could have afforded to fix all these problems should they arise. My question is, if I sign the lease could I be held made to pay the repairs or is there an Ohio law that requires… [cont.]

A. It looks like you are signing yourself up for trouble- you sign your lease you get held to that lease. And even if you were to sue them to make it right? You would probably complicate the relationship. Id ask for sure on clarification- and if it really is this way- you really didnt find the place you need.

If you know air-conditioning, please help?
Q. I remodeled an old Chicago bungalow. To get AC, and avoid ruining 9 foot ceilings, (while also adding cooling to the attic) I ran ducts along the knee walls in the attic and then registers straight out the ceiling below to the first floor. I also cut into the sides of the ducts to go straight out thru the knee walls to cool the attic. BUT, the AC can barely keep the house at 82 degrees. I admit, the attic is MUCH, MUCH, cooler, and the "edge" is taken off the 1st floor, but how much will I gain if I ventilate the enclosed area around the ducts to the outside, say with a fan? The ducts are sealed around the perimeter of the the attic walls and it must get really, really hot in there. All the AC is LOST in transit with the heat against the… [cont.]

A. I'm having a hard time visualizing this duct work. You say you ran the ducts in the attic and that you cut into the sides of the ducts to cool the attic, which is now a master bedroom. If that is the case, what would cause the ducts to get hot if they are in the conditioned space? Besides that, has the system ever cooled effectively? If so, what has changed? Was a load calculation performed to determine the latent and sensible heat load on the bungalow? Without more information, there's not much more I can offer. Sorry.
