In a broader sense, the term can refer to any form of cooling, heating, ventilation, or disinfection that modifies the condition of air. An air conditioner (often referred to as AC or air con.) is an appliance, system, or machine designed to stabilise the air temperature and humidity within an area (used for cooling as well as heating depending on the air properties at a given time), typically using a refrigeration cycle but sometimes using evaporation, commonly for comfort cooling in buildings and motor vehicles. The concept of air conditioning is known to have been applied in Ancient Rome, where aqueduct water was circulated through the walls of certain houses to cool them. Similar techniques in medieval Persia involved the use of cisterns and wind towers to cool buildings during the hot season. Modern air conditioning emerged from advances in chemistry during the 19th century, and the first large-scale electrical air conditioning was invented and used in 1902 by Willis Haviland Carrier. GNU Free Documentation License Air conditioning? Q. I have a 99 oldsmobile cutlass and in the morning when it's cool my air conditioning works great. When it gets warm or hot outside the a/c doesn't turn on. You can hear it cut on when it want's to! Why does it work in the cool weather but not the hot? Asked by jellybean_r_us - Thu May 17 19:17:51 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. May wish to check the cooling fan(s) for the radiator/condenser. Higher temperatures outside mean higher pressuures in the a/c system. If the fans are not working properly, the pressure will go so high that the high pressure cutoff switch will cut off the compressor, untill the system pressure drops. When the compressor turns back on, the cycle repeats. Answered by bartzan41 - Thu May 17 20:02:59 2007 Will we have to replace the air conditioning unit if we remove the heat pump? Q. We currently have an air to air heat pump. We would like to replace it with a propane furnance. If we do so will we have to replace the air conditioning unit as well? From what I understand, the air to air heat pump utilizes the air conditioning unit to run. Will our current air conditioning unit still work independently from the heat pump? What changes to the unit will need to be made, if any? Asked by pep_bud - Wed Sep 12 16:37:12 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. The easiest way to use your heat pump with a new gas furnace would to use a honeywell t8000 stat with an outdoor sensor. This allows the stat to control the gas furnace for back-up heat and emergency heat and gives you the option of a lock out temp. You will have to remove the evap coil from the air handler a install it in the new ductwork. The other controls that do this type of system are called fossil fuel kits. They cost more money and are harder to install (more wiring). Q. I have a Lennox power humidifier model WP2-18. I have noticed that whenever I turn off the air-conditioning fan, the humidifier doesnot work. How are these two things tied together? Do I have to keep the fan running for the humidifier to be operational. Asked by catchvim - Sun May 4 17:02:21 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. The humidifier only receives power when the fan is running.
