Air conditioning?
Q. I have a 99 oldsmobile cutlass and in the morning when it's cool my air conditioning works great. When it gets warm or hot outside the a/c doesn't turn on. You can hear it cut on when it want's to! Why does it work in the cool weather but not the hot?
Asked by jellybean_r_us - Thu May 17 19:17:51 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. May wish to check the cooling fan(s) for the radiator/condenser. Higher temperatures outside mean higher pressuures in the a/c system. If the fans are not working properly, the pressure will go so high that the high pressure cutoff switch will cut off the compressor, untill the system pressure drops. When the compressor turns back on, the cycle repeats.

What would cause the air conditioning to be permanently on in a focus?
Q. What would cause the air conditioning to be permanently on in a ford focus? Even though the air con is switched off, very cold air is comming out the air vents when it should just be cool air from outside (unheated). I switched it on and off and it seems to have stayed off this time but there must have been something causing it to remain on. (using a lot more fuel)

A. Is the switch broke, does it feel "right" If it does, you have a wiring problem. If you want to cut it off temp, there is a two wire connecter on the dryer, that is the thermos looking thing under the hood. you can take that loose and probably shut it off. Good Luck

How common is air conditioning in Ireland?
Q. I happened to see a list of air conditioning contractors in Dublin. It was a surprisingly long list. My understanding is that it rarely goes above 21 celsius (70 fahrenheit) in the summer. It would be hard to justify the expense of air conditioning at temperatures like that. Is it humidity? Why so many people in the air conditioning business?
Asked by Johann - Tue Jul 28 21:53:38 2009 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. We tend to think of an air conditioner as a cooler or dehumidifier although modern air conditioners can heat and ventilate as well as cool the air in a reversed refrigeration cycle. While it is not very common to have air conditioning units in homes in Ireland, most modern commercial buildings have air conditioning. They may not be so obvious as most are installed in roof areas and operate through small vents in ceilings.

Can a dog be okay without air conditioning during the summer in an apt?
Q. We might be moving into a huge 2,000 sq ft warehouse loft next month, but it does not have air conditioning. We have a dog and 2 cats. We live in Philadelphia so it gets hot in the summer. There is a huge fan up on the high ceiling and we will probably put an air conditioner in the window in the bedroom area, since there are walls around the bedroom. For the most part, it wont be air conditioned. I am worried that the dog will pass out or get over-heated. Should I be worried?
Asked by Jessica R - Thu Apr 10 17:00:20 2008 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Dogs and cats can overheat easily. Use a floor fan along with the ceiling fan. You can also buy air conditioners that can roll around the house. Keep plenty of fresh water out so they can hydrate.

Why doesnt the air conditioning or heating work in my '92 Buick Lesabre?
Q. I have a 92 buick lesabre. About four months ago my air conditioning stopped working. By that, I mean that it would blow air, but the air wouldnt be cold. Then yesterday my heater stopped working in the same way, so now my car blows the same temp air out the vents regardless of the setting. Any help narrowing down the source would be great!
Asked by Jennifer K - Wed Apr 4 00:07:59 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The A/C problem and the heater problem are probably not related... but could be. They are both electrically controlled by the HIVAC control head. The cause of your A/C not blowing cold could be caused by alot of different things. The lack of heat also. On your lack of heat issue... There is something simple that you yourself may be able to check, that is, your coolant level in the radiator. If your coolant level is low (from a leak) there may not be enough coolant to circulate through the heater core and this may be the cause of your lack of heat. Make sure the engine is cold before attempting to check or have anyone else check the coolant level. If the coolant level is low you will need to have the source of the leak fixed.

Who can tell me about air conditioning parts or lead me to a good diagram?
Q. We are trying to fix the air conditioning at work (the landlord won't do anything) and need to replace some parts. We have the ducts and I have found out that the ducts are connected to the collars (male/female). The collars are then attached to a big square piece which then has the grille attached where the air goes out. Does anyone know what the big metal square piece is called? I've been looking online but so far, no luck. And if you know of any good diagrams illustrating this, that'd be great as well. Thanks!

A. You are referring to a supply air plenum. And the grill piece is called a supply register.

What is the reason for a slow or stopped central air conditioning outside cooling fan with a loss of cold air?
Q. The recent problem seems to be related to the outdoor cooling fan. The air conditioning system seems to be working properly, but there is a loss of cooling of the air coming from the indoor air conditioning vents. I inspected the outside unit, and yesterday the cooling fan was stopped with a humming/grinding sound. The capacitor looked good (no bulging), but I'm not an electrician and I have no way (or the knowledge) to test voltages and amperages and such. Anyway, I blew on some dust/dirt/cobwebs around some of the wires, and started the system back on and the fan moved at normal speed and the system worked and cooler air came out. However, today, the indoor temperature wasn't maintained and I went outside and the cooling fan was… [cont.]

A. replace your outdoor fan and while your at it replace the capacitor and everything will be fine. But turn your unit off untill you get it fixed or you'll be changing a compressor or buying a new unit.

A. No there should not...most likely the drain is stopped up and will need cleaning...this very easy and you can do it yourself ...just remove front cover of unit drain line should be visible along with two copper a/c lines...remove drain line ..flush with water hose ...run some bleach down it and reassemble...this should solve your problem...

How do I clean an air conditioning unit?
Q. I have an air conditioning unit in the wall of my living room that has been permanently installed. What is the best way to clean it and the reusable filter? I just want to get the dust and crud out so it runs better.

A. Your best bet is to do an internet search based on the manufacturer and model of your AC unit. You may be able to find a user's manual that will tell you how to take apart the unit to clean it.

Is there a portable air conditioning unit out there on the market?
Q. Please excuse my ignorance, but is there a portable air conditioning unit (blows out cool air in a HOT ROOM) without being attached/fixed to the wall, as in carry it with you just plug it in to a wall socket and have it blow out cool air. I know this may seem like a dumb question, but a simple answer would be much appreciated. Thank you!

A. there are two units that are kind of like that, but not quite. one is called a swamp cooler. they evaporate water to absorb thermal energy in a room, but make the room more humid, and only really work in dry climates. however, they are relatively cheap to buy and use little energy. the other is a regular AC unit, but, this is not a window unit. they make one that is a free standing floor unit that can be pushed around and plugged in anywhere. however, the only downside is that there is a 3 or 4 Inch diameter hose that comes out of the back of the unit that must be run outside, through a window or a cat door or something. the unit is similar to window units in that it must move the heat from the room to the outside, but it does not have to… [cont.]

Is it dangerous to leave cars air conditioning on while car is off?
Q. My mom says if you leave your cars air conditioning on when you turn the car off, so it automatically is on when you turn your car on, that it hurts the engine. Is that true or is she full of BS? It sounds like complete BS to me.
Asked by Elijah - Mon Jun 9 22:42:58 2008 - - 32 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No. It isn't dangerous. When you turn the key to "start" all electrical circuits which are wired through the ignition switch are disconnected, except those which are used for starting the car. When the engine starts and you release the key, from the start position, then all the circuits are again connected. I know a lot of people, most of who don't know the starter from the distributor, who insist that the AC needs to be switched off before starting the car. I don't switch it off and never have had a bit of trouble, with either the engine or the AC on any of my cars.

What is the best, inexpensive way to add Air Conditioning to my 1993 Chevy G10 Van?

What is the average temperature you set your air conditioning at?
Q. We live in central FL. My husband is from a tropical climate and does not want to use air conditioning at all. I would love the air to be set at about 75 but have compromised and am willing to have it set at 80 degrees. I think this is very reasonable, but he insists it is set at about 83 degrees if it is on at all. At this temperature I am very uncomfortable and have trouble sleeping. Am I being unreasonable here or is he?

A. It is really a great career choice, especially if you get certified to doing newer units as well as the older ones. Ten years ago, my dad was making $20 an hour (though he did have over 20yrs experience). Now I know they make more than that. It is recession proof, you don't have to worry about layoffs, and honestly you get a much deserved break about twice a year (spring and fall, when its not too hot nor too cold).

Is it possible for a home air conditioning unit to be the cause of its coils going bad?
Q. My Mom owns a Trane air conditioning unit and has had nothing but problems with it. She had the coil replaced on it a couple of years ago. Now a technician is telling her that the coils are bad again. They are telling her that there is something in the environment, her sprinkler system (sulfur), which is causing it to go bad. Does this explanation sound feasible? She uses well water for her sprinkler system but has had this sprinkler system for nearly 20 years. Before she had to get a new unit about 3 years ago she never had problems with the coil. Is it possible that the air conditioning unit itself could be causing the coils to go bad? i.e, a Freon leak or something.
Asked by ultradevguru - Wed Oct 10 17:30:38 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Absolutely NO. I am sorry to say that many people like to lie about stuff that you dont know about and EXTORT money from you.The refrigerant contains oil which moves through the system with the refrigerant and a leak in the coil is very rare unless hit with a lawnmower or such. Also a leak can be repaired but ther is no profit in it and it takes time.I am an HVACRR Tech, 15 years and have heqard it all. You are welcome to contact me and I would love to have the Tech. (supposed) explain it to me!!! I will give you my phone number to have him call.
