the difference between air conditioning and air conditioner?
Q. Could you please tell me the difference between air conditioning and air conditioner? I knew that we can say that "this car comes with an air conditioning" . How about the following sentence: Does your apartment has an air conditioning /conditioner? Does this building has an central air conditioning system?
Asked by for2000 - Fri Aug 4 13:23:58 2006 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. As others have said, an air conditioner is the machine, air conditioning is the result. Note that the machine is an object, therefore countable--you need "an". "Air conditioning" is intangible, therefore non-countable--no "an". >>I knew that we can say that "this car comes with an air conditioning" . You would say just "comes with air conditioning" or "an air conditioning system". >>Does your apartment has an air conditioning /conditioner? (With a question using "do", don't conjugate the main verb) You can say "Does your apartment have air conditioning?" or "Does your apartment have an air conditioner?" >>Does this building has an central air conditioning system? Again, "have" not "has", and it's "a" rather than "an" ("an" only goes… [cont.]

Can an air conditioning attached to the furnace in your house blow up?
Q. Every once in a while you hear of bgger industrial air conditionings on sky scrapers or commercial buildings getting old, and then people reposrt a big bang, and the air conditioning blows up. Can this happen to a house airconditioning??? And what signs should you look for when you try your air conditioning out for the first time in the spring after a cold canadian winter?

A. Dan and Irv are right. Your home A/C unit isn't likely yo explode on you. Your water heater however... that is a different story. The first thing you should do before you fire up your A/C is to make sure it warm enough outside. Operating the unit when it is below, say 55F (13C) is inviting liquid refrigerant to damage your compressor. Slugging is the term. Other things to check: - Clean filter - Clean condenser (outside) coil. Just hose it down. Be careful not to bend or damage the fins. If it looks really dirty, then call for a service tech to do it. They will come armed with a foaming coil cleaner that will fix it right up. - How's your evaporator (inside) coil? Be honest now. How many times has the furnace been run with a… [cont.]

What would cause the air conditioning to be permanently on in a focus?
Q. What would cause the air conditioning to be permanently on in a ford focus? Even though the air con is switched off, very cold air is comming out the air vents when it should just be cool air from outside (unheated). I switched it on and off and it seems to have stayed off this time but there must have been something causing it to remain on. (using a lot more fuel)

A. Is the switch broke, does it feel "right" If it does, you have a wiring problem. If you want to cut it off temp, there is a two wire connecter on the dryer, that is the thermos looking thing under the hood. you can take that loose and probably shut it off. Good Luck

Does air conditioning in a car have different effects on different size motors?
Q. What would help a car not burn so much gas when running the air conditioning? In other words, if the gas consumption is awful with a (let's just say) 307 c.i.d. engine will it "NOT" be so bad with a 350 crate motor (tuned for a nice output of horsepower) or a restored Cadillac 500 c.i.d. engine? What are the variable specifics on whether or not an a/c compressor (or system for that matter) will take a considerable toll on a car fuel tank and mileage? I just figure it was some kind science to the whole thing.

Why is my air conditioning not working on my central heat and air?
Q. My heat works and my air conditioning does not. Would anyone know why. Do these units need freon to work? Thanks for your time. Oh, wanted to ask also. Is there a switch or something that I might have to switch on / off?
Asked by CinCin - Sun Mar 8 17:04:53 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you have a combined heating/air cooling system, you have to have a separate air coolant compressor and heat dissipating fan/radiator located on the outside of your home. This unit has a separate electrical supply which has a 'trip' protective switch (red button) which might have been "tripped" due to some 'glitch', and which needs to be pushed to reset the switch.

Is the air-conditioning unit connected to electrical power supply?
Q. That is, if your electricity was to get knocked out, does that mean your air-conditioning unit will stop working as well? Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but I really don't know, lol. Thanks in advance. No need to get snippy. I just want to know if it gets power from the same line that you hook up your fridge and TV and everything else to, or if it has a separate electrical line.
Asked by Ruby - Sat Jul 21 15:09:17 2007 - - 8 Answers - 1 Comments

A. I'll assume your referring to a central A/C system. Either way the answer is yes. A window unit is self contained but a central, or whole house, system has two separate power sources. A 220v circuit for the condensing unit (the outside unit) and a 110v circuit for the blower unit. This could be a separate air handler or the furnace blower itself. There's also a control circuit, usually 24v but it's transformer is part of the 110v circuit of the blower unit. If your electricity is "knocked out" you should shut your A/C unit off until power is restored to prevent damage to compressor.

What is the reason for a slow or stopped central air conditioning outside cooling fan with a loss of cold air?
Q. The recent problem seems to be related to the outdoor cooling fan. The air conditioning system seems to be working properly, but there is a loss of cooling of the air coming from the indoor air conditioning vents. I inspected the outside unit, and yesterday the cooling fan was stopped with a humming/grinding sound. The capacitor looked good (no bulging), but I'm not an electrician and I have no way (or the knowledge) to test voltages and amperages and such. Anyway, I blew on some dust/dirt/cobwebs around some of the wires, and started the system back on and the fan moved at normal speed and the system worked and cooler air came out. However, today, the indoor temperature wasn't maintained and I went outside and the cooling fan was… [cont.]

A. replace your outdoor fan and while your at it replace the capacitor and everything will be fine. But turn your unit off untill you get it fixed or you'll be changing a compressor or buying a new unit.

Who replaces air conditioning and coolant hoses?
Q. I've been having some problems with my car. It's a 2001 Ford Taurus and it's in pretty good condition except lately its hoses have been leaking. The coolant hose leaks really bad, also my air conditioning has a hose that leaks freon (sp?) faster than I can put it in. Since it's nearly summer here in Louisiana, I want to fix my AC! So who do I take it to to have the hoses replaced? I never said the coolant and the A.C were related. Don't be an idiot.

A. take it to your mechanic, or a dealer. Most anyone can fix coolant hoses (radiator). Air conditioning refrigerant is a hazardous material, Special equipment need to add/change/dispose of the liquid.

A. The water from the air conditioner is condensation. It is normal for the water to be produced. It comes from the moisture in the air. The hose is for it to drain away. It is gravity fed, so you need to run the hose downward to a drain. It will not run upward. Find a way to drain it downward, and your water leak is solved.

A. Your best bet is to do an internet search based on the manufacturer and model of your AC unit. You may be able to find a user's manual that will tell you how to take apart the unit to clean it.

A. It can get really hot and some schools get let out early or even canceled due to the heat. With air conditioning schools don't have to worry about that and the student's learning won't get interupted or stalled. It could also be a step towards having school year round. But I love summer vacation so I don't really see that as a good thing though..

A. You want to start with what you have that is very familiar to you but you haven't described it enough. Is it a forced hot air system with duct work and is the duct work insulated? If this is the case then the process is to install an "A" coil above the furnace and below the plenum that distributes air to the various ducts. This is connected to a condensate drain, and two refrigeration lines that are also insulated. The refrigeration lines connect to an outside unit called a condenser. The condenser has to have electrical power attached to it. The refrigeration lines must be vacuumed out with a vacuum pump and then the refrigerant has to be transferred to the appropriate levels in the now closed system. The cost for this work will… [cont.]

A. there are two units that are kind of like that, but not quite. one is called a swamp cooler. they evaporate water to absorb thermal energy in a room, but make the room more humid, and only really work in dry climates. however, they are relatively cheap to buy and use little energy. the other is a regular AC unit, but, this is not a window unit. they make one that is a free standing floor unit that can be pushed around and plugged in anywhere. however, the only downside is that there is a 3 or 4 Inch diameter hose that comes out of the back of the unit that must be run outside, through a window or a cat door or something. the unit is similar to window units in that it must move the heat from the room to the outside, but it does not have to… [cont.]

Is it dangerous to leave cars air conditioning on while car is off?
Q. My mom says if you leave your cars air conditioning on when you turn the car off, so it automatically is on when you turn your car on, that it hurts the engine. Is that true or is she full of BS? It sounds like complete BS to me.
Asked by Elijah - Mon Jun 9 22:42:58 2008 - - 32 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No. It isn't dangerous. When you turn the key to "start" all electrical circuits which are wired through the ignition switch are disconnected, except those which are used for starting the car. When the engine starts and you release the key, from the start position, then all the circuits are again connected. I know a lot of people, most of who don't know the starter from the distributor, who insist that the AC needs to be switched off before starting the car. I don't switch it off and never have had a bit of trouble, with either the engine or the AC on any of my cars.
