Some fireplaces like Rumford fireplaces are very shallow and prone to allowing sparks and smoke into room especially if the draw is not good. We keep a smoke stick handy on the truck to test a fireplace if there is any question of how it draws. is where we get them from. If you work the trigger on it you can get it to make a pretty large plume of smoke that will test out the draw of the flue without having to light a fire to test it. Q. Our neighborhood gets power outages on a regular basis, including two this year that were extended (7 days in the summer, and 36 hours in the winter). I never want to go through this again, especially in the winter months. We're building our dream home in a few years and I would like to have the capability to heat our house with wood. We will probably do mostly solar power, but I'd like to have a back up. I've discovered that, when it comes to heating your home, most traditional fireplaces are a joke. I know some people use wood burning stoves for heat, are there any regular type fireplaces that will put out heat? What do I have to know for when I plan my new home? Are there any good websites or books that will help me with this? Well,… [cont.] Asked by Camellia - Fri Jan 30 21:43:19 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. About 40 years ago, I had a standard fireplace with a heating system that would force heated air out and take the cold air from the floor into it with a standard wood fire. It was a steel back plate that needed no electricity to operate. It forced us to open the doors and windows in the house when the outside temp was close to 0 F and the inside was about 90 F. Talk to some fireplace design shops. I think this was a custom order, but it did put out the heat.
