A heat pump is a machine or device that moves heat from one location (the 'source') to another location (the 'sink' or 'heat sink') using mechanical work. Most heat pump technology moves heat from a low temperature heat source to a higher temperature heat sink. Common examples are food refrigerators and freezers, air conditioners, and reversible-cycle heat pumps for providing thermal comfort. Heat pumps can be thought of as a heat engine which is operating in reverse. One common type of heat pump works by exploiting the physical properties of an evaporating and condensing fluid known as a refrigerant. In heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) applications, a heat pump normally refers to a vapor-compression refrigeration device that includes a reversing valve and optimized heat exchangers so that the direction of heat flow may be reversed. Most commonly, heat pumps draw heat from the air or from the ground. Some air-source heat pumps do not work as well when temperatures fall below around −5°C(23°F). From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What can we do about our homes over sized heat pumps? Q. The heat pumps in our home are oversized. They cycle on and off too often. The house is cold and clammy. We have 6 tons of cooling but by my calculations, we only need 4 tons. Replacing them with smaller units is too costly. Is there a way to derate them or resolve the situation? The compressors have two speeds and the fans have variable speeds. Any advise would be appritiated. Asked by vpiegr - Sat Jul 12 15:39:04 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. If they are over-sized and are two speed then why are they not just running on the first stage? You cant derate what you have. Sounds like you need a professional in there to verify your calculations and see if something is not working or wired properly. Answered by gizmoe - Sat Jul 12 15:58:07 2008 What are the relative advantages of Geothermal heat pumps and Wind turbines? ? Q. If a heat-engine (Geothermal heat-pump) instead of a wind-turbine were installed instead of a wind-turbine, what difference would it make? Chariotmender, . thank you for a comprehensive and informed answer. If I'm allowed one supplementary question, please, Then why aren't we installing Geothermal heat pumps instead of windmills? -Or more accurately, I suppose, why are we building so many windmills instead of installing heat pumps in appropriate places? Asked by Huguette - Tue Sep 30 09:39:06 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. What are some of the advantages of using geothermal energy to generate electricity? Clean. Geothermal power plants, like wind and solar power plants, do not have to burn fuels to manufacture steam to turn the turbines. Generating electricity with geothermal energy helps to conserve nonrenewable fossil fuels, and by decreasing the use of these fuels, we reduce emissions that harm our atmosphere. There is no smoky air around geothermal power plants -- in fact some are built in the middle of farm crops and forests, and share land with cattle and local wildlife. Easy on the land. The land area required for geothermal power plants is smaller per megawatt than for almost every other type of power plant. Geothermal installations don't require… [cont.] Answered by Chariotmender - Tue Sep 30 09:57:23 2008 Heat pumps, Oil based furnace or geothermal heat pump?
Q. Which one is best? My mom's tank for her oil based furnace has racked so now she is left with the option of getting a new one or getting another way to cool/heat the house. Any suggestions? Which one heats/cools better? which one is more cost effecient? which one is better for the environment? any tips would be definetely appreciated. Asked by 2legit2quit - Tue May 13 15:24:18 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Allot depend on your location. Heat pumps are very efficient in moderate climates. Geothermal is initially very expensive but very efficient. With the price of oil I would be concerned with any carbon based fuels.
