Is it hard to change a hvac coil?
Q. I have been doing hvac ductwork for only a couple months and was offered a job replacing hvac coils. Is it really hard to do. I know the basics but not much more. I normally just do the trunk lines and run the flex to the boots but someone offerred a job paying pretty good money replacing coils. I have helped install them once or twice but I'm not sure I could handle it by myself. Do I need to know alot about electrical work or anything? Thanks in advance.

A. You will need to know how to properly remove refrigerant, brazing copper lines, how to properly pull a vacuum on the unit and recharge. Of course there is the disassemble of the unit but most of the time that's not the hard part. On the electrical part, you should only need to know how to turn off the breaker or disconnect switch to the unit. The hardest part may be the location of the unit. Outside units are most of the time reasonably accessible. The inside unit on the other hand can be very hard to work around. With you duct experience you may be able to make the unit easier to get to while your doing the work. If your just changing the coil that is one thing but if you are charging the unit to get it back in running condition, you… [cont.]
